Department of Social Anthropology

The Department of Social Anthropology at Panteion University is the only department in the country that offers undergraduate, postgraduate and doctoral studies, exclusively in social anthropology.

Our aim is to equip students with the specialized knowledge in theory and methodology for the study of social and cultural diversity, in relation to issues of power, identity and inequality, in an increasingly complex world. As students acquire the skills of anthropological research, they become aware that engaging in the lives of those studied, together with the use of a holistic, in-depth, multi-layered approach to the research phenomenon, constitute the core of the anthropological perspective which challenges stereotypical “us” and “them” thinking and exposes implicit discourses of power.

The faculty members’ main areas of research interest include gender studies, biopolitics, culture theory, nationalism and ethnicity, indigenous studies and ethnomedicine, religion, theories of material culture, kinship systems, the body and health, economic anthropology, urban anthropology, migration and refugee studies, conflict and violence, political history and political and social transformations. Our regional interests include the Balkans, Southeast Europe and the former Soviet Union, as well as countries in the Middle East, North Africa and South and Southeast Asia, in addition to Greece.

The Department of Social Anthropology has a keen interest and is actively involved in the development of joint research programs and the strengthening of academic exchanges. As a participating partner in numerous ERASMUS+ programs, it collaborates, on an annual basis, with well-known academic institutions in many EU countries, the Balkans, Turkey and most recently, China, Canada and Chile.
