University Senate
The University Senate is the supreme decision-making body of the University. As part of its mission, it oversees the operation of the Higher Education Institute, while it formulates the strategy for its development at a local, national, European and international level, and shapes its unique character.
The Assembly consists of: i. the Rector; ii. the Vice Rectors; iii. the School Deans; iv. the Department Presidents; v. the student representatives; vi. three staff representatives, one per staff category (Special Educational Staff [EEP], Lab Teaching Staff [EDIP] and Special Technical Lab Staff [ETEP]); vii. a representative of the University’s administrative staff.

The Rector’s Council recommends to the University Senate the strategy for the development of the Institute, prepares and shapes the annual regular budget and the Institute’s final budget, and drafts the planning agreements. It consists of: i. the Rector; ii. the Vice Rectors; iii. a student representative; vi. a representative of the University’s administrative staff who also participates in the University Senate.

Christos Papatheodorou is Vice-Rectror for Finance, Planning & Development of the Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences (Athens, Greece) and Professor of Social and Policy at the Department of Social Policy. He is a graduate in Economics (First Class Hons) from the Department of Economic Sciences, University of Athens and holds an MSc in Social Policy Analysis from the University of Bath and a PhD from the London School of Economics and Political Science (LSE). At the LSE he also did his postdoctoral research (postdoctoral fellow at LSE-STICERD)
He has many academic distinctions and has been elected to positions of responsibility and administration both at the university and in other scientific institutions. He was Dean of the School of Social, Political and Economic Sciences and Professor of Social Policy at the Department of Social Administration and Political Science, Democritus University of Thrace, Greece. He was head of the Research Unit “Social Policy, Poverty and Inequalities”, Labour Institute, Greek General Confederation of Labour. He was a Researcher at the Institute of Social Policy, National Centre for Social Research (Athens), a visiting academic at LSE-STICERD and a visiting professor at the Dept of Sociology, VU Amsterdam. He was Senior Research Associate for the “Greek Observatory on Poverty, Inequalities, Income and Social Exclusion”, UADPhilEcon, University of Athens. He served as Deputy Head of the Department of Social Administration, Democritus University of Thrace. He was Director of Postgraduate Studies at the Department of Social Policy, Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. He was an expert in the Greek Committee Cooperation–Socioeconomic Sciences and Humanities of the 7th Framework Program Founded European Research and Technological Development, National Strategic Reference Framework (ESPA). He is a founder member of the Hellenic Social Policy Association where he was chairman and a board member for many years, and a founder member and a broad member for many years of the Greek Association of Political Economy. He is reviewer in scientific journals, monographs and book series. He has been awarded scholarships for postgraduate studies and postdoctoral research.
His main areas of research interests and publications are in the fields political economy of social policy, social and economic inequalities, income distribution and redistribution, poverty and social exclusion, intergenerational consequences of inequality, distributional impact of government policies, macroeconomic environment and social protection, functional and personal distribution of income. His expertise includes management and design of large social data bases and research infrastructures. He has participated and coordinated a large number of research projects in the above fields. His work has been published in books, research monographs, articles, book chapters and research reports, and has been presented in many conferences. Also short articles and interviews on issues related to inequality, poverty, social policy and economic crisis have been published in the Greek and foreign press. He has been an invited speaker in radio and TV programs.

Associate Professor Marianna Psylla
Associate Professor of Political Communication

Marianna Psilla is an Associate Professor of Political Communication in the Department of Communication, Mass Media and Culture at Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. She received her Ph.D. in Political Science from the University of Paris I Sorbonne in 1990. At the same university she completed her Masters in the fields of 1) Ideology and Political Culture and 2) Political and Social Communication. She was the Head of the Department of Communication Mass Media and Culture, for the period 2016-2018. She had the position of the Director of the Division of Mass-Media at the same department from 2011-2017. She is the Director of the Master Cultural Management, Communication and Media at the Department of Communication, Mass Media and Culture and Deputy Director of the interdepartmental Master Gender, Society, Policy.
She taught at the University of Crete at the Department of Sociology (1990-1993) and the Department of Philosophical and Social Studies (1993-1995). Since 1995, that she was elected as Faculty member at Panteion University until today, she has been teaching at the Department of Communication, Mass Media and Culture. At Postgraduate level she taught at the following Universities: 1) University of Crete (2004-2013) 2)Greek Open University (2005-2019) 3) Panteion University α)Interdepartmental Master in «Psychology and Means of Communication» (2007-2008) b) Master at the Department of the Political Science and History (2009-2015) c) Postgraduate Program New Media and Journalism of the Department of Communication, Media and Culture which since the academic year 2018 was renamed as Society of Information, Media and Technology (2015 until today), d) Interdepartmental Postgraduate Program Gender, Society and Policy(2015 until today). Moreover, she is a member of a Special Interdepartmental Committee responsible for the operation of the Aforementioned Postgraduate Program.
In 2018 was a visitor – researcher at the University of Lyon 2, with which she runs common research programs. In terms of mobility, she has taught in Erasmus+ European and International Program, as well as in many European Universities and at the University of Québec-Rimouski in Canada. Since 1997 until now she has participated in the European and International Program Erasmus+ and is currently responsible for 25 undergraduate and post-graduate programs between ‘Panteion’ University and 15 European countries and Canada. At present moment, she is the Institutional Coordinator–Scientific Supervisor of the Erasmus+ Program of Panteion University.
Furthermore, she is a member of the French and Hellenic Political Science Associations. She has a various and multiple research work. Since 2017-2021, she participates in the European Program CODES (Communication, Cultural Diversity, and Solidarity). She has been a Country Coordinator for Greece. The CODES is an Inter-universal program (Erasmus+keyaction1 : Strategic Partnerships) coordinated by the University of Lyon 2. The CODES program brings together the research teams of the universities of six countries (France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Portugal, Romania) in order to connect directly tertiary education and society, as well as to define the role of education, in the management of diversity and multiculturalism. She is a Scientific Officer of the National Internship Program of Practice (2009-2018) for the Department Communication, Media and Culture of Panteion University. Since 2002 until now, she is the editor of the series “Communication–Politics” at the Typothito-G. Dardanos publishing house, Athens, Greece, where there have been published until today 10 (ten) book titles. She worked as a member of Scientific and Organizing Committees in a number of scientific conferences and workshops. She has published five books, 8 book chapters and journal articles in Greek, French and English.
Professor Theodosios Palaskas
Theodosios B Palaskas is a Professor of Economic Analysis & Development Economics, Director of the Centre for Economic Policy Studies at Panteion University of Athens, and scientific associate of Athens Academy. He completed his graduate studies in Athens and his postgraduate studies, (M.Sc, MA (honours). & D. Phil), at the University of Oxford. Previous academic appointment has been at the Oxford University – Institute of Economics and Statistics, International Development Center, and at St Peter’s College. He was elected Vice Rector at Panteion University for theperiod 2000-2002 and directed for five years the Greek Foundation for Economic and Industrial Research (IOBE). He was a holder of the IKY – Foundation of Public Scholarships- and the NATO Scholarships for three years to study at Oxford. His research has been financed by the European Commission, The World Bank, University of Oxford, ODA Research Scheme, Greek Ministries, such as Ministry of Development, Ministry of Economics, Bureau of Credit, Bank of Greece, Association of Greek Banks, Athens Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Association of Greek Industries, etc. His research interests focus on Economic Development issues and International and has published papers in scientific economic journals, books and working papers and has been quoted in the ‘Journal of Econometrics’, ‘Journal of the Royal Statistical Society’, ‘Review of Economics and Statistics’, ‘Oxford Bulletin of Economics and Statistics’, ‘Journal Of Development Economics’, etc.
Professor Dimitris Christopoulos
Christopoulos is a professor of state and legal theory at the Department of Political Science and History of the Panteion University of Athens (www.panteion.gr) where he has been teaching since 2003. His courses include an Introduction at the European Legal and State Theory, Minorities in Europe, Citizenship and Migration and Art, Freedom and Censorship. Christopoulos has taught as visiting professor and provided lectures in different universities in Europe and the US. He has published in Greek, English, French, Portuguese, Hebrew, Albanian and Serbo-Croatian in scientific reviews or journals in the field of legal and political theory focusing on issues related to human rights, the far right, minorities, migrants and citizenship.
Professor Athena Athanasiou
Athena Athanasiou is Professor at the Department of Social Anthropology, at Panteion University of Social and Political Sciences. She is currently the Director of the Laboratory of Anthropological Research. She has been Head of Department (2015-2017) and Director of Graduate Studies (2018-2020). She has received her Ph.D. at the New School for Social Research, in New York, and was a postdoctoral fellow at the Pembroke Center for Teaching and Research on Women, at Brown University (2001-2002).
Her research interests include: gender studies, contemporary critical theory, social/cultural theory and cultural studies, anthropological theory, politics of memory and mourning, biopolitics, social suffering, vulnerability and resistance, subjectivity and power, theories of performativity, decolonial critique, social movements and intersectionality, art, embodiment, disability studies, psychoanalytical theory
Professor Yannis Skarpelos
Yannis Skarpelos studied Sociology and holds a PhD in Visual Cultural Studies. He is teaching at the Department of Communication, Media and Culture since 1996. His interests are focusing on the sociological and semiotic visual analysis. The last decade his research is focused on computational analysis of big visual data, videogames and social network analysis.
His research activities include the creation of Panteion University eclass, the project TRIPMENTOR Interactive Tourist (funded by the “Research-Create-Innovate” program), INTERMEDS: Intercultural Mediators (funded by Erasmus+), and RIPEC: Research for Innovative Practices in Emergency Management of Erasmus Community (funded by Erasmus+).»
He is the founder and head of the New Media Lab of the Department since 1999, and has been associate chair and chair of the Department, member of the Panteion Senate, and of the Research Committee.
He is a member of the International Visual Sociology Association, and has acted as a member of its Board during 2002-2005 and 2012-2018. He is also a member of the Hellenic Semiotic Society and an associate member of its board since 2019.
